The Cuyamaca Quilting Guild began in 2015 with 4 ladies: Susan Carter, Terri Groth, Colleen Manzer, Maryann Miller. Terri was an accomplished hand quilter, but the other three had no quilting, and a little sewing experience. We all loved fabrics and the beauty of quilts and wanted to try our hand, so we bought a book, selecting a quilt known as a “log cabin” to try. Each quilt was the same pattern but very different in arrangement of the blocks and colors; we so enjoyed the effort and support we shared that we continued meeting and encouraging others to quilt.
The group now has about 10 members, with a wide range of experience and interests. We typically meet once a quarter and a member hosts the event. Each meeting includes “show and tell” which can include completed, in-progress, or mistakes in quilts. We also try to focus on a learning topic. Topics have included basics like making a quilt sandwich, to more advanced such as free motion quilting. We have also done some group projects in which we all contributed quilt squares to make a complete quilt and then donated it to “Quilts of Honor” which give quilts as a thank you those who have served and to honor their service and sacrifice. There is a wide range of skills, experience and interests in the group and we encourage anyone who would like to learn about quilting, or who is already an experience quilter to join us. We spend plenty of time laughing and enjoying good food and it is a very supportive group.

The Cuyamaca Woods book club has been going strong since March 2008. We meet on the first Saturday of every month at 9:45 am at the homes of members living in Cuyamaca Woods. But you don't have to live in the Woods to join us. Anyone who owns property here is welcome. We alternate between reading a book together for one month, then meet the next month to share about books we've enjoyed individually. We read both fiction and non-fiction and we choose books by voting on titles recommended by members. Everyone gets the opportunity to suggest books and lead our lively discussions.
If you would like to join the book club, please contact Terri, terrigroth@gmail.com
The Cuyamaca Woods Garden Club was founded in 2015 by Matthew Wilson, Colleen Manzer, Bryan Barnes and Matthew Arsena. The meetings are hosted by the club members which not only include gardening topics, field trips to various garden tours and nurseries, but usually includes a hosted brunch!
Over the years we have had special outside guest speakers, as well as, current members teaching numerous subjects, such as pruning fruit trees, native landscape vegetation, winter gardening, just to name a few. In our October meetings (Harvest Time), a canning session is held which involves club members, with full participation which includes the A to Z canning process by one of the founders, Bryan Barnes.
Our meetings are held on the third Sunday of March, June, October and December of each year and is open to all property owners and residents of Cuyamaca Woods, whether you are a gardener or not!
